Today -- on April 16th in 2026 -- Cuba's most trusted TV journalist, Lazaro Manuel Alonso, informed the island's citizens of another massive tragedy. One of the most unique and most beautiful areas in Cuba and in the world, the province of Pinar del Rio, is on fire. Lazaro has over 315,000 follows on Facebook alone and his TV plus Social Media journalism lately has mostly involved extreme reports on the tightened seven-decade U. S. blockade, a possible U. S. military attack, food & medicine shortages, island-wide electricity blackouts that plague homes and hospitals, etc. But today his news told the Cuban people about the horrific fires!!!
These tragic fires today are ravaging one of Cuba's and the world's most beautiful and most unique places -- Pinar del Rio Province that is home to Vinales Valley. That Province and that Valley are a short and scenic drive southwest of Havana and, if the U. S. Blockade would allow it, the area would again be a huge tourist attraction.
Just north of the city of Pinar del Rio, the 10th largest city in Cuba, is the gorgeous town of Vinales that is the gateway to the incomparable Vinales Valley. In 2004 when I visited Cuba I was astounded by Vinales, which remains the most beautiful area I've ever seen. I am now 85 years old and I lived in Wyoming for 18 years, which has many beautiful jewels but none as beautiful and unique as Vinales Valley.
So, for sure, it pains me today to learn about Lazaro Manuel Alonso's reports on the fires ravaging the province of Pinar del Rio and Vinales Valley.
