66 Years After His Revolutionary Win!!
And Nine Years After He Died
Today is January 7th in 2025. The photo and quotation shown above was from January 7th in 1959. The historic photo and quotation was in Matanzas, the city just an hour's ride from Havana. It was the last leg of the 500-mile "Liberty Caravan" led by Fidel Castro and his most important revolutionary companion Celia Sanchez on their dilatory trek from Santiago de Cuba to Havana after the Cuban Revolution had shocked the world by defeatting the US/Mafia-backed Batista dictatorsship. The trek ended the next day in the capital city of Havana. But all along the way the Liberty Caravan stopped in cities where the new revolutlonary leader Fidel Castro made fiery sppeches before adoring crowds. In the stop in Matanzas shown above, translated from Spanish to English, Fidel was saying: "I am sure that the freedoms that our people have won with so much sacrifice, nothing and no one will be able to take them away again. I can sure that the days of terror will not return, that the days of terrible fear are behind us, that the days of torture, beatings and murder are far behind us."
It was appropriate, of course, that Celia Sanchez was at Fidel Castro's side on the week-long road trip from Santiago de Cuba to Havana in the first week of January in 1959. Celia fought side-by-side during the Cuban Revolution's war and, as shown above, she was also at Fidel's side during the nights when they planned the next day's battle plans or tried to get an hour or so sleep.
And also, let it be known, that after the revolutionary victory it was Celia Sanchez who was the prime decision-maker in Revolutionary Cuba. Above Celia was starting her day writing down a law that Fidel would without hesitation make into a valid law in their rule of Revolutionary Cuba. From the start of the revolutionary war till she died on January 11th in 1980 of cancer at age 59 in Revolutionary Cuba, Celia was the prime decision-maker...with Fidel's total concurrence.
And, also appropriately, it was Celia Sanchez whose quotations best described the Cuban Revolution that was led from start to finish by her and Fidel Castro. The two quotations shown above are perhaps the two best Celia Sanchez depictions about the Cuban Revolution, a revolution that she knew better than anyone else.
In 2016 Fidel Castro died peacefully at age 90 in Havana. Still in January of 2025 Fidel Castro's legacy rules Cuba, although the island is holding on only barely -- as the headlines below on January 7th in 2025 reveal.
The headline above in The Wall Street Journal, the USA's largest newspaper, is an example of dire news predicting Cuba's demise heading into another Trump Presidential Administration that begins on January 20th, 2025.
As shown above, on January 7th in 2025 the powerful Orlando Sentinel newspaper in Southern Florida blared the headline above. That headline fronted the great and historic photo by the AP's John Rous that was taken on January 7th in 1959, which was the week that the victorious Cuban Revolution had made Fidel Castro the undisputed leader of Cuba.
And Yet...66 years later Fidel Castro's words still rule Cuba.
